April 2015 meeting minutes

Green Country Fly Fishers Monthly Meeting 04/07/2015

Meeting called to order at 7:02 by Ivan Winger

There were 34 present, 24 members and 10 Guests.

Business meeting was moved to 8:00 and the guest speaker, Chad martin, gave his presentation first.

Chad lives in Hamilton Montana and guides with Tightloop Outfitters there and with Three Rivers Fly Shop at Lower Mountain Fork.  He told us that Broken Bow/Lower Mountain Fork was now receiving their stocking fish from Crystal River Hatcher in Missouri and the quality of fish has improved. During Spring break this year there was an unscheduled water release and it was a very dangerous situation and there was very little time to get everyone off of the river. He was going to discuss the issue with Oklahoma Game and Fish Commission.  Lower Mountain Fork is 4.5 hours from Bartlesville. If we wanted to have an outing there Chad would help us set it up.  There is a Lower Mountain Fork Foundation that provides support for the area. It is mostly Texas residents. There is not a dedicated Game Warden for the area and there should be. That county sells more fishing licenses than any other county in Oklahoma. The fishing is better than at Roaring River in Chad’s opinion. There are more Brown Trout in Broken Bow than other areas, Midges are a good fly to use along with Blue Wing Olives in sizes 30-32, caddis in 14-18. He said to try different colors.  The generation schedule at Broken Bow is unreliable.

In Montana Chad guides on the Painted Rocks Reservoir. There is an abundance of Bull Trout there. It is at an elevation of 3,500 feet. They use dry flies year around. The also fish the Bitterroot River. This river along with most Montana rivers is not stocked. He said bigger flies attract bigger fish. The East and West Fork in Montana have very large brown, cutthroat, and Bull trout.

You should use a guide when fishing unfamiliar water
